The method proposed by Abplanalp (1961) for obtaining linear estimates of heritability and genetic correlation is extended to various mating designs and also applied to construct selection index. Appropriate formulae for calculatipg phenotypic, genetic and environmental correlations are presented with numerical example from a single population of one generation. As Abplanalp stated, the method permits an evaluation of asymmetry in both heritability and genetic correlation when selection is for both directions, as well as differences in those parameters associated with selection intensities.
