The acidic properties of some solid acid catalysts were measured by Tamele's titration method with indicators of pKa=3.3, 1.5 and -3.0, and by ESR method. These properties were compared with the catalytic activities for the alkylation of toluene with methanol. These results revealed that acidic sites measured with indicator of pKa=1.5 were active centers for this alkylation reaction, and that they were mainly Brönsted acid sites.
