To clarify unsteady cavitation mechanism of orifices, which are widely used in fluid power systems, some experiments about two shapes of orifices were carried out under sinusoidal and stepwise flows.Cavitation was mainly detected by pressure ripples at the outlet side of the orifice, and also a TV camera was used to observe the cavitation clouds. For the case of sinusoidal flows, the effects of average flow rate, amplitude and frequency to the inception and desinence of cavitation or cavitation choking were mainly shown along with the number of cavitations. Finally, cavitation characteristics of a orifice are compared with those of a long orifice already reported5).
