Abstract
Introduction. Disulfiram is a US FDA approved medication for the long term management of alcohol dependence and has been is use since 1951. The present study compares Disulfiram to various other agents approved for the long term management of alcohol dependence. Methodology. Disulfiram was compared to Acamprosate, Naltrexone, Topiramate, Baclofen and combinations in the management of alcohol dependence. Data from various studies done by the author with over 200 subjects on Disulfiram is analysed and presented. Results. Disulfiram had significantly greater efficacy in reducing relapse rates, increased time to the first drink and increased days of abstinence as well percentage of patients abstaining when compared to Naltrexone, Acamprosate and Baclofen as well as Topiramate. Conclusions. Disulfiram is an under used drug in the management of alcohol dependence and must be used widely in diverse groups to study its efficacy.
