Abstract

The objective of this paper is to report the findings of several surveys of small and medium- sized businesses conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business on the impact of the Canada-U.S. Free Trade Agreement. Surveys conducted before and after the contents of the Agreement were known indicated that small businesses became more positive about the impact of the Agreement on their business after the Agreement was made public. The undecided proportion also increased significantly in the “after” survey. The paper also discusses several aspects of the Agreement which are especially important to smaller firms, some of which have not figured prominently in general discussions about the Agreement to date.
