An interstratified mineral of mica and montmorillonite was found in the hydrothermally altered tuff in the Kagowara area of southern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The mineral has a 27.14 Å of (001) reflection and it expanded to 29.4 Å by treatment with ethylene glycol. The 27.14 Å reflection moved to 10 Å after heating to 800°C The mineral has interstratified structure of mica and montmorillonite having two layers of water molecules between silicate layers. The probability parameters defining the structure can be shown as: PA (mica layer existing probability)=0.60, PB (montmorillonite layer existing probability)=0.40, PAA (probability that A succeeds A)=0.33, PAB=0.67, PBA=1.0 and PBB=0.0.
