Abstract

According to provide the edentulous patients with the best masticatory functions, phonetics and esthetics, the best complete dentures are inserted into them. Therefore, when the complete dentures are made up, it is a basic procedure to complete the good balanced occlusion that the occlusal vertical dimension are properly established.By way of finding out how the occlusal vertical dimemsion has a influences upon the masticatory functions of complete dentures, the author uses the semi-conductor apparatus developed by Moriya and Fukamizu. The biting forces, masticating forces and forces in the swallowing period of the upper first molars on the ogriginal, higher and lower complete dentures wears (8 males) from 50 to 60 in age are recorded at the same time as the electromyography of the masseters and temporalis of left and right side.As the results of these efforts, the following conclusions are obtained.1. The biting forces in upper first molars of the original complete dentures are the largest values, in order comes the lower (73.9-89.5 percent) and the higher (28.0-49.0 percent).2. The masticating forces in all periods and foods are the largest values, in order comes the lower (about 39-73 percent) and the higher (about 12-31 percent).3. As for the electric discharge activity of the masseter and temporalis during biting at various occlusion and masticating each food, the original and lower complete dentures chart the active of the recruitment and gradual rise and fall type. The higher complete dentures register tne small amplitude and frequency in the electric dischage activity.
