Requirements for optical disk memories in data storage systems and present engineering limits related to optical disk technologies are discussed. Advanced technologies that compensate the gap between the requirements and the limits, such as high performance phase change media, an integrated optical head and so on, are investigated, following a description of the trends in performance of optical disk storage systems.
