現在, CCITTを中心に広帯域ISDN (B-ISDN) の検討が進められている.B-ISDNでは伝送方式としてATM伝送を用い, また広帯域であるため, ビデオ符号化方式が満足すべき種々の要求条件が生ずる.このため, B-ISDNに適したATMビデオ符号化技術が必要となる.本稿では, 符号化方式の設計に影響を与える網の特性を整理しながら, ATMビデオ符号化技術の動向について述べる.
