The paper deals with the mechanism of collapse of plate girders in bending caused by the flange local buckling. Particular consideration is given to the evaluation of web rigidity for the vertical buckling of flange. The web rigidity is replaced to the equivalent spring constant which is connected with web deflection. Thus, ultimate bending moment of plate girders is obtained through the buckling analysis of flange which is supported elastically by the spring. For the experimental results, the method of the analysis can explain very well the failure mode of plate girders caused by vertical buckling of flange.
