Abstract

This paper deals with the development and utilization of a comprehensive space related “lessons learned” data base for capturing important knowledge which can be applied to future space program applications. The data base was the end result of a study conducted by Rockwell International for the NASA/KSC/Space Station Logistics Systems Office in support of early Space Station concept development and planning. The “lessons learned” focused primarily on the areas of maintenance, maintainability, operability, and accessibility. The information contained within the data base was gathered from NASA Manned Space Programs including Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Spacelab, Space Shuttle as well as additional input from Air Force programs, the Trident submarine program and commercial industry. The effort included an analysis for a concept and management approach which could be utilized for the development and implementation of a generic “Lessons Learned” Specification. The concept could be applicable in the Preliminary Design, Design and Production phases of current and future programs and would ensure maximum utilization of experience gained.
