本論文は, 都市計画の合理化に資することを目的に, システム分析的都市計画の重要性を示し, その実現方法について議論したものである. 具体的には, 都市計画における地理情報システム (GIS) 利用の意義を踏まえ, これを要素とした総合的な都市計画支援システムの全体構成を明かにし, これを数理的最適化手法, 知識工学, CAD等の技術を駆使して実現する方法, 及びそれに基づくシステム構築の具体的な事例について述べている.
