Characteristics of snowfall in the mountain region of the Chugoku district, west Japan are reviewed and compared with the results of an areal snow survey. The regional dependency of the snow depth distribution is marked compared to the altitude effect. The non-existence of terrain obstacles to the winter monsoon is favorable for heavy snowfall. Orographic development of cumulus clouds is suggested through the decreasing rate of chemical content in the snow. The regional difference of cumulus development is also revealed by snow crystal observations. The oxygen isotope composition of the snow particles suggests a different mechanism of snowfall on the west side of the mountains.
