Chondrosarcoma in the Pelvis and Proximal End of Femur. Five Case Reports.

We treated five patients with chondrosarcoma arising from the pelvis and proximal end of the femur. The male and four females all had primary cases and were followed-up from 1986 to 1990. The age distribution was from 41 years old to 77 years old with an average age of 63.4 years old.In three patients the chondrosarcoma had occurred in the iliac bone, in one patient in the sacral bone, and in the last patient in the proximal end of the femur. We removed the tumor locally in two cases, and performed chemothrapy and/or radiotherapy on the other cases.We concluded that the prognosis for our patients with chondrosarcoma which occured in the pelvis and proximal end of the femur was poor, because a curative surgical removal of the tumors is impossible even in low grade chondrosarcoma.
