北極域の近年の氷河変動に関するこれまでの観測や研究のなかで主要な知見をまとめた.まず北極域の氷河の地理的分布について紹介し,次いでそれぞれの地域における氷河変動の観測結果を紹介した(グリーンランド,スバルバード諸島,アイスランド,北極カナダ,北極ロシア).最後に100年以上の観測結果がある代表的な氷河の変動をまとめた.北極域の氷河変動は地域により異なる傾向を示すが,1850年頃まで前進期,それ以降現在までを後退期または停滞期として分けられる氷河が多い.
