Abstract

Abstract Monomers were prepared of substituted methacryloyloxymethyl earboranes and submitted to radical polymerization. From derivatives bearing other substituents than hydrogen on the carbon atoms in the carborane skeleton, linear polymers were obtained. Crosslinked polymers always result from carboranes, substituted on one carbon atom only. Obviously, crosslinking is the result of an interaction of the CH bond in the carborane skeleton with the growing chain of methacrylate groups.
