髄膜炎でみられる持続性の頭痛の原因は,脳浮腫による牽引痛,髄膜の炎症組織からのキニン類,ヒスタミンなどの発痛物質による痛覚受容体の刺激閾値低下,さらには発熱による脳内動脈拡張に起因すると考えられている.髄膜炎の診断上,髄液検査による細胞数増加の確認が決定的意義をもつ.ウイルス性,化膿性,結核性,真菌性などの主要髄膜炎の診断・治療について概説した.
