Abstract
From 1959 to 1961 at Mesa, Arizona, numerous alfalfas were assessed for their performance when exposed to populations of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), thrips (mainly Frankliniella spp.), leafhoppers (mainly Aceratagallia curvata Oman and Beamer), the three-cornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus (Say), and lygus bugs (principally Lygus Hesperus Knight). Although none of the alfalfas showed strong indications of resistance to these insects, several apparently have sufficient resistance to serve as sources for selection. The most promising alfalfas for three-cornered alfalfa hopper resistance were Chilean 21–5, Kansas 67–1108, and Sirsa #9; for pea aphid resistance, Doehnefeldt, Du Puits, Socheville Brand, and North Carolina Synthetic G3; and for lygus bug resistance, Zia, Rhizoma, and Stoneville Polycross No. 1. Significant differences among alfalfas in leahopper or thrips populations were not obtained.
