METHODS The database of our institution has been retrospectively evaluated. Doppler blood flow analyses were performed using a 10 mHz ultrasound probe after intracorporal injection of 7 to 20 micrograms (ug) of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) by a single operator. The peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), and resistive index (RI) for each cavernosal artery were evaluated. The degree of the curvature (DoC) at peak erection was measured and the direction was recorded. The continuous variables were compared between pre-defined groups by using Kruskal Wallis test. Furthermore, the effect of ED type on DoC after controlling for the effect of patient's age was evaluated by using ANCOVA. Chi square test was used to evaluate the association between existence or direction of curvature and ED. RESULTS A total of 220 patients with PD underwent penile Doppler ultrasound assessment between 2008-2010. The mean age of the patients was 55.0±9 and 69.5% had vasculogenic ED (10% arteriogenic, 43.2% venogenic and 16.4% mixed). The mean±SE DoC was 41.7±5.2, 41.3±2.5, 37±4.1 and 37.3±3 degrees in arteriogenic, venogenic, mixed and no ED groups respectively. There was no difference between these groups in terms of DoC (all p > 0.85). Similarly direction of curvature was not affected by existence or type of ED (p=0.284). CONCLUSIONS The direction and severity of penile curvature does not have an impact on concomitant ED in patients with PD.
