Infection experiments of measles virus (Edmonstone strain) and canine distemper virus (Hokkaido strain) in dog kidney cultured cells were conducted under the similar experimental conditions, and properties of these viruses were observed. The formation of multinucleated giant cells and the formation of eosinophilic intranuclear and cytoplasmic inclusion bodies were observed in the infection by both viruses. However, there was a considerable difference in the length of period required for the appearance of the CPE after the virus inoculation, namely, it took a short period with measles virus while a longer period with distemper virus. As for the infectivity of these two viruses to dog kidney cultured cells both showed a stable infection titer on the second to the third generation in successive cultivation, but the measles virus titer was higher than that of the distemper virus. Both viruses showed infectivity to HeLa cells, FL cells, PS cells and JTC-3 cells, and measles virus showed only a weak infectivity to L cells while the distemper virus failed to show any infectivity even in several infection attempts.Serologically, the serum of measles patient neutralized measles virus and it more effectively neutralized distemper virus.
