Exposure of the Belgian population to pesticide residues by intake of fruit and vegetables

Abstract

The legislation concerning the presence of contaminants in food is becoming more severe. The presence of pesticide residues on fruit and vegetables is no longer tolerated. Maximum limits are established by the national and international governments. The finale goal is that, within a few years, no more exceeding of those limits appears. This is not yet the case. Too often, limits are exceeded, which might cause a risk to human health. Earlier studies have shown that excessive intake of pesticide residues not only leads to acute but also to chronic effects. There might exist a link between the intake of residues and cancer, endocrine disruption, neurotoxic effects, dysfunctions in children,... One possibility to examine whether or not limits are exceeded in Belgium, is by calculating the dietary intake. Residue and consumption data are coupled and compared with the postulated limit or Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI). In case the ADI is exceeded, possible negative effects may occur.
