Eustachian tube function was examined in 30 patients with middle ear cholesteatoma who underwent middle ear surgery. In 90% of patients with retraction type cholesteatoma, the forced opening pressures of the tube were either lower than or within the normal range of forced opening pressures. 69% of patients with retraction type cholesteatoma could equilibrate the applied negative middle ear pressure by swallowing. Clearance function examined by a dye technique was not impaired in 81% of patients with retraction type cholesteatoma. These results show that eustachian tube function in retraction type cholesteatoma is not significantly impaired.
