A Case of Carotid Body Tumor with Extension to Infratemporal Fossa, Pterygopalatine Fossa and Intracranium

We describe a 25-year-old woman with carotid body tumor with extension to the infratemporal fossa, pterygopalatine fossa and intracranium. At the first exploration in 1976, the right common carotid artery was ligated, causing left hemiplegia. After two more operations, she was admitted to our clinic, complaining of a painless mass in the right parotid region. Enhanced CT Scan demonstrated a hypervascular tumor in infratemporal fossa, pterygopalatine fossa and intracranium. The tumor of infratemporal fossa and pterygopalatine fossa was extirpated, but at a subsequent operation, the intracranial mass could not be completely removed.
