RIGHT UPPER BRONCHUS TRANSECTION CAUSED BY BLUNT CHEST TRAUMA

Abstract

Transection of the bronchus is a very rare complication which might be caused by a blunt chest trauma. A 2-year and 7-month-old girl having a right upper bronchus rupture due to the blunt chest trauma was operated on 6 hours after the injury. At thoracotomy, transection of the right upper bronchus was found in close vicinity to the distal end of the right main bronchus. Significant destruction of the right upper lobe was observed, besides.Therefore, we gave up bronchoplasty, and performed right upper lobectomy, with a satisfactory outcome. In Japan, prior to this, no case presenting the rupture only at the upper bronchus has been reported. While the bronchial rupture due to the blunt chest trauma in general has been reported in 17 children under 15 years old, this is the youngest of emergency operation cases.
