Abstract

Aim: We aimed to evaluate retrospectively the patients’ features that applied to hospital with acute gastroenteritis and were diagnosed antibiotic associated gastroenteritis. Material & Method: 65 patients who applied to hospital from September 2000 to September 2005 with acute gastroenteritis and used antibiotic at the time of application or within 4 weeks before application and couldn’t be found any reason for gastroenteritis were evaluated retrospectively. Results: The patients’ range of age was 17 – 65 and there were 23 male and 42 female in the group. Gastroenteritis occurred 1-8 days after the last antibiotic dose. It was found that 47 patients used ampicillin-sulbactam, 9 patients used ampicillin, 6 patients used amoxicillinklavulonate, 2 patients used amoxicillin and 1 patient used spiramicin. Conclusions: Using antibiotics common and mostly inappropriate is a serious health problem. Because of that, principles of rational antibiotic use should be practised and inappropriate antibiotic using should be avoid
