A Study on Periodical Characteristics of Korean Reception of Modern Dance

Abstract

Appearance of Korean art dance has consisted of acceptance of New Dance in the Japanese occupation period. New Dance in this period is the acceptance of Modern Dance born in the West, since then the age of creative dance as a stage dance has come. In this perspective, this study has a purpose on researching periodical characteristics of western Modern Dance which has developed into Korean Modern Dance accepted in Korean dance society. The following results have driven by analysing document study along with historical consideration in the process of study. First, the acceptance of Modern Dance from Japanese occupation period to 1950s created New Dance which was accepted by Japanese Ishiyi Bakue in 1926 and Korean movement and theme have been accepted by new dancer like Seunhui Choi and Taekwon Jo. Second, the acceptance of Modern Dance in 1960???1970s has the characteristics of expressing Korean spirit through western techniques by combining Korean theme and American techniques after American Martha Graham's techniques had been accepted. Third, the Modern dance became to have the diversity of contemporary dance after university alumni dance companies were appeared in 1980???1990s. The Korean dance society shows different periodic characteristics in acceptance of Modern Dance as mentioned above. However, the expression skills of Korean contemporary dance utilizing Modern Dance are required to have diversity of expression through movement development which could have Korean speciality and identity
