Flywheel energy storage is old idea, but recently, new design concept using new material (CFRP, etc.) has been incorporated to improve energy and power density of the flywheel (FW). Recent movement made it possible to replace the electrochemical storage battery for eletric vehicles or stationary applications, such as computer back-up power supplies and load-leveling and so on. The authors designed and tested a high efficiency FW system and proposed an application to the electric vehicles. FW energy storage system is promising system for the future EV and fuel cell EV.
