The correltions between the endoscopic injection sclerotherapy and its resultant tissue changes of the esophagus were studied in 6 patients with esophageal varices autopsied who died after the sclerotherapy using 5% ethanolamine oleate. Extravasal injections induced severe inflammation in the esophageal wall. Intravasal injections also induced inflammatory changes extended beyond the variceal wall into the surrounding tissues. Microcirculatory obstruction was prolonged in the entire esophageal wall, which should promote the degree of the inflammation induced by next sclerotherapy. Multiple sclerotherapy procedures during a short period was thought to induce irreversible inflammatory process resulted in deep ulcer with uncontrollable bleeding or an esophageal perforation.
