Interaction of Longitudinal Vortex with Horseshoe Vortex Configuration Effect of Longitudinal Vortex

Abstract

A horseshoe vortex at a wing-body junction introduces the reduction of wing performance. A vortex generator is effective for the performance improvement. The interaction of the longitudinal vortex with the horseshoe vortex is strongly affected by the configuration of the longitudinal vortex. In this study, we carried out the experiments under different interaction between the horseshoe vortex and the longitudinal vortex with two types of the vortex generator configurations. NACA 0024 wing at zero angle of attack was mounted in the wind tunnel. We measured three-components of velocity by the rotating X-probe hot-wire anemometer and the total pressure by the Pitot probe. The direction of movement of the vortex pair can be changed by the position of the longitudinal vortex. A dependence of the spacing of vortex generator on the total pressure loss is also clarified.
