Abstract

A 32-year-old woman with a 6-year history of benign intracranial hypertension was referred with headache symptoms for assessment of patency of a lumbopleural shunt. This had been inserted after failure of several previous lumboperitoneal shunts. Chest radiographs showed the shunt catheter to be in situ, but there was no evidence of pleural effusion. After intrathecal administration of Tc-99m DTPA, activity was seen in the right pleural space, confirming shunt patency.
