GASTROCOLIC FISTULA DUE TO CARCINOMA OF THE TRANSVERSE COLON -A CASE REPORT-

A case of gastrocolic fistula due to carcinoma of the transverse colon is reported, together with a review of 13 cases including the present case reported in Japan. A 53-year-old male complaining of an abdominal tumor was admitted to our hospital. Upper GI examination revealed a shadow defect at the greater curvature in the corpus of the stomach. Barium enema showed a fistula between the stomach and transverse colon with an apple core lesion in the transverse colon. Curative operation (left hemicolectomy and subtotal gastrectomy) was performed. The resected specimen showed a transverse colon tumor, Type 2 (localized-ulcerating type), 10×9 cm in size, invaded the stomach wall with gastrocolic fistula. Microscopic examination revealed mucinous carcinoma invaded the muscular layer of the stomach. Twelve months after the operation, the patient is well with no sign of recurrence.A total of 13 cases including the present case of gastrocolic fistula due to carcinoma of the transverse colon have been reported in Japan. Microscopically 4 cases of them were mucinous carcinoma. Curative operation with the extended resection of tumors including the surrounding organs or tissues was performed in 11 cases of them.
