Abstract

Studies were conducted in the laboratory to determine the extent of resistance to malathion in field populations of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst). The studies revealed that field populations of this species are 44-fold resistant to malathion in comparison to a laboratory maintained population. The resistance in this species appears to be of malathion-specific type since triphenyl phosphate suppressed the resistance. The malathion-resistant strain did not show cross-resistance to 4 other organophosphorus insecticides. Tolerance levels to the 4 compounds were: pirimiphos methyl × 0.8; Ciba-Geigy CGA-20168 (trans-phosphorothioic acid, 0,0-dimethyl-0-(2-methoxycarbonyl-2-methylvinyl)-ester) × 0.8; bromophos × 1.0; and fenitrothion × 1.0,
