Abstract

The external structures of the compound eyes of adults and nymphs of Triatoma infestans and of adult Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) were studied using scanning electron microscopy. In T. infestans, the number and dimensions of the ommatidia increased with age, and in adults an increase in body length corresponded to an increase in the number of facets. No sexual dimorphism was found in the external structure of the eye or in the number of ommatidia in T. infestans. Interommatidial setae were sometimes present in R. prolixus but were absent in T. infestans.
