To make effective use of bamboo resources, adsorbent block from Mosochiku (Phyllostachys pubescens) were prepared by carbonization in several conditions and the specific surface area and iodine adsorption characteristics of bamboo charcoal were measured. The appropriate carbonization method to prevent the crack and to carbonize fast has been founded. The specific surface area of bamboo charcoal varied widely in the range of about 1-400m2/g with carbonization temperature and carbonization time.Further, the granular bamboo charcoals were activated by carbon dioxide gas. The specific surface area and iodine adsorption characteristics of the activated bamboo charcoal manufactured appropriately were comparable to commercial activated carbon.
