Abstract

The result of our investigation showed that the use of family donors for fresh whole blood and apheresis donation had remarkably decreased and their passing rate of the pretransf usion tests without anti-HCV (NANBV) and anti-HBc antibodies were much lower than volunteer donors. On the other hand, the screening of anti-HCV and anti-HBc antibodies in the blood from the Red Cross Blood Center has been added to the regular tests in expectation of the decrease of posttransfusion hepatitis since November, 1989. In addition, the supply of fresh whole blood and platelet concentrate prepared from volunteer apheresis donors has satisfied the need of our hospital.Consequently, the commitee of blood transfusion medicine in our hospital decided to discontinue collecting blood from family donors except for autologous blood.
