680 PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION IN SUBJECTS WITH METABOLIC SYNDROME

Abstract
Objective: To identify the prevalence of hypertension in subjects with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Materials & Methods: We enrolled 100 patients with metabolic syndrome using International Diabetes Federation 2005 guidelines (IDF-2005). Hypertension was diagnosed and classified according to Joint National Committee VII (JNC) criteria. The blood pressure (BP) was measured by using calibrated sphygmomanometer, anthropometric measurements, lipid and glucose estimations were done for all subjects. Results: The overall prevalence of hypertension in subjects with MetS was 65.8%. Prehypertension: was found in 56.4%, Stage I hypertension: was found in 43.7%, Stage II hypertension: was found in 22.1%. Age, obesity, diabetes, serum cholesterol and serum triglycerides were found to be strongly associated with hypertension. Only 60.5% of the hypertensive subjects were aware that they were hypertension. Conclusion: Prevalence of hypertension was high in these subjects with metabolic syndrome and nearly 60.5% are unaware of their hypertensive status. Prevalence increases with age, obesity, diabetic status and dyslipidemia. This study highlights the need for regular screening coupled with educational programmes to detect, improve awareness and optimally treat hypertension in the community to reduce cardiovascular and renal complications.
