Abstract

Objective To investigate the value of plasma lipoprotein- associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) levels in the diagnosis of suspected coronary heart disease (CHD) subjects. Methods Enrolled suspected CHD subjects (n = 73) and health control (n = 31), 104 in total. Coronary angiography (CAG) was performed in 73 patients who suspected as having CHD. According to the result of CAG, patients were divided into CHD group (n = 52) and non-CHD group (n = 21) and control group (n = 31). The CHD group was further divided into subgroups according to whether need Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), including PCI group (n = 25) and non-PCI group (n = 27). The plasma levels of low density lipoprotein –cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), Lp-PLA2, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) were measured in all groups and the results were compared and analysed. Using logistic regression analysis the relationships between each variables and CHD. Results The plasma level of Lp-PLA2 was higher in CHD group than that both in non-CHD group and control group (p < 0.001 and < 0.05, respectively). There was no significant difference in the level of Lp-PLA2 between non-CHD group and control group. HDL-C levels was lower in CHD group than that both in non-CHD group and control group (p < 0.021 and < 0.014, respectively). There was no significant difference between non-CHD group and control group. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the plasma level of Lp-PLA2 is the independent risk factor to CHD (p = 0.002, OR 1.011), HDL is the protect factor to CHD (p = 0.021, OR 0.045). However, there was no significant difference of the plasma level of Lp-PLA2 and HDL-C between PCI group and non-PCI group (p = 0.244 and 0.716, respectively). Conclusion The plasma level of Lp-PLA2 is higher in CHD patients, there was significant prediction value to test plasma Lp-PLA2 level in suspected CHD patients for their diagnosis.
