Abstract
ABSTRACT THE effects of snout ventilation (using outside air) and snout cooling (using refrigerated air) were evaluated based on the performance of 187 sows and litters in a commerical facility for the summers of 1982, 1983 and 1984. Snout cooling increased piglet average daily weight gain during lactation by five percent. Sow feed consumption also increased by 5%. Snout cooling and snout ventilation reduced sow respiration rate indicating increased sow comfort due to the snout systems..
