今世紀初頭には既にその存在が考えられていたHelicobacter pylori (H. pylori)は, 1983年になってやっと明らかにされるに至った. H. pyloriは,現在では上部消化管疾患の病原因子として重要な位置を占めている.この十数年で,菌の性状,病原性,感染者の病態,治療法等につき,基礎,臨床ともに研究が急速に展開してきた.しかし, H. pylori感染に関してまだ不明なことも多く,今後さらに検討が必要である.
