With the help of pollen data from 23 surface samples (alt. 650-3, 100m; Fig. 2), 5 pollen diagrams (Figs. 3-5) establish 5 major vegetational changes for the last 12, 000 years in the montane zone of central Japan, i.e., boreal-pine, (anterior to 10, 500 B.P.), boreal-temperate (10, 500-9, 500 B.P.), temperate (9, 500-4, 500 or 4, 000 B.P.), temperate-boreal (4, 500 or 4, 000-1, 500 B.P.), and pine or birch-herbaceous (after 1, 500 B.P.).
