We studied 118 cases of major salivary gland tumors. The tumors arose in the parotid gland in 93 patients (malignant tumor: 22 cases), the submandibular gland in 24 patients (malignant tumor: 8 cases), and the sublingual gland in one patient.For parotid benign tumor, extracapsular removal with preservation of the facial nerve was the principal method and the results were satisfactory without any recurrence. On the other hand, total parotidectomy, with or without preservation of the facial nerve, were performed for malignant parotid tumors and radical neck dissections were done in 11 cases. Tumors of the submandibular and sublingual gland were removed totally with those glands. The 5-and 10-year survival rates of the malignant tumors of the major salivary glands were 54% and 45% respectively.
