Abstract

Asellus aquaticus is a freshwater species occurring throughout the entire paleoarctic continent. In winter, southern Mediterranean population prolongs the duration of amplexus, at the end of which fertilization occurs, and also embryonic/larval development, whilst northern populations show a typical reproductive diapause. Reproductive activity therefore shows a geographical variability, larviposition taking place only when conditions are favourable.
