Abstract

Background and aims: procalcitonin (procalcitonin PCT) as a new index infection monitoring has been paid more and more attention, the plasma PCT level is closely related to the severity of bacterial infection and its prognosis Aims: To evaluate the value of serum procalcitonin (PCT) in antibiotics used for the treatment of pneumonia in children. Methods: 272 patients with pneumonia were randomly assigned to PCT group and control group.Patients in the PCT group were treated with antibiotics guided by the levels of serum PCT. The antibiotics treatment was stopped or not used if PCT level<0.25μg/L.Conventional treatment group by the treating physician in accordance with antibiotics user guide decision whether or not to use antibiotics. To compare the duration of antibiotic therapy, the exposure of antibiotic in two group and observe the PCT levels changes after the treatment with antibiotics in PCT group. Results: The duration of antibiotic therapy and the exposure of antibiotic in PCT group was significantly shorter than that in the control group (p<0.05), But the prognosis in two group have not significant difference. The PCT levels after after 5 and 7 days of treatment was significantly lower than on admission (c2= 15.86, c2= 18.86 respectively, p<0.01). Conclusions: Dynamic monitoring of PCT levels to guide the exposure of antibiotic in pediatric pneumonia, can reduce the exposure of antibiotic, and shorten the duration of antibiotic therapy and the length of hospital stays.
