Genetics of malate dehydrogenase isozymes in the peach

Abstract

Three distinct multiple banded zymogram patterns were observed for malate dehydrogenase (MDH) isozymes among the 290 peach cultivars surveyed. Analyses of segregating progenies revealed only one locus that could be used as a genetic marker in breeding programs. Due to lack of segregation of certain isozymes, we were unable to identify the total number of genetic loci involved in the control of MDH isozymes in the peach. A single isozyme (Rf 0.19) was associated with the mitochondrial fraction of the cellular extract and is probably controlled by a different nuclear gene locus. Evidence from haploids and segregation data indicate that MDH isozymes in the peach are of multimeric subunit structure.
