Abstract

The Engineering Link Project, Phase II is a three day course for Year 11 students who have, or who might have, an interest in engineering. The course is organised by two schools, Townsville State High School and Thuringowa State High School, but conducted by engineers, who lecture briefly on their field and then present the students with a typical problem from their field. The students then, in their groups, test the materials offered, and design, construct and test their solutions. The essential theme of the Link is that students are engineers, rather than observing engineers. The Project is in its fifth year, and is solidly supported by local schools, tertiary institutions, local industry and professional associations of engineers. Phase I is being trailed this year, and is a less demanding version for Year 10 students. These students will be able to make more informed subject selections for Senior School.
