Abstract

Studies on the use of floral characters for the classification of varieties of Arachis hypogaea are described and it is concluded that the primary character for classification should be habit. The varieties may be placed in two groups, the prostrate Virginia type and the erect Spanish and Valencia types. Observations of fruit characters of 24 varieties revealed that one was intermediate between A. hypogaea subsp. hypogaea and subsp. fastigiata.
