Abstract

The body needs only small amounts each day, measured in milligrams, of thiamin, riboflavin and vitamin B6 to sustain the normal metabolic processes of life. Frank vitamin deficiency diseases are rare in developed societies. Because refining cereal products removes thiamin, restoration to bread and cereals is permitted in Australia to ensure that daily requirements are met. Lack of thiamin affects the cardiovascular, muscular, nervous and gastrointestinal systems. (author abstract)
