Abstract

A hybrid between Elymus canadensis L. (2n = 4x = 28) and Secale cereale L. (2n = 2x = 14) was produced by embryo culture methods. Morphologically the hybrid plant resembled in part both the maternal and paternal parent. The hybrid was self-sterlie and had a somatic chromosome number of 2n = 21. Cytological examination of chromosome pairing at meiosis showed primarily PMCs with 21 univalents and an average chiasma frequency of 0.53, indicating that the genomes of E. canadensis and S. cereale are not closely related.
