Control rods were designed for use in the Experimental Gas-Cooled Reactor that are sufficientiy flexible to move in bowed graphite channels. The stainless steel-clad B/sub 4/C bushings that make up the control rods are suspended on cables connected to the drive mechanisms. The rods are cooled internally by helium admitted at the top of the control rod nozzles. Tests of a mockup of a control rod verified the feasibility of assembly and provided pressure drop data. No major manufacturing problems were encountered and the finished rod weights varied from 137 to 142 lb. (auth)
