Abstract

Effect of VAM, Rhizobium and phosphate on nodulation, root colonization, nitrogen uptake and grain yield of chick pea was studied on Calciorthent (calcareous alluvial sandy loam). Seed inoculation with Rhizobium strain significantly increased nodulation, root colonization, small grain yield, dry matter yield and nitrogen uptake by grain and straw. Seed inoculation with Rhizobium strain DG-48 and soil inoculation with VAM (Glomus fasciculatum and Aculospora laevis) increased further nodulation, per cent root colonization, grain yield, dry matter yield and nitrogen uptake over uninoculated control. Gut of the two VAM fungal species the performance of Glomus fasciculatum was the best in increasing nodulation, root colonization, grain yield and nitrogen uptake by grain and straw. The interaction effects of VAM x Rhizobium and phosphorus x VAM x Rhizobium were nonsignificant in most of the cases except nitrogen uptake by grain.
